SSE broadband review and overview

SSE are relatively new to offering broadband and phone packages but they are backed by the huge SSE Group which includes Southern Electric, Scottish Hydro, SWALEC and SSE.

SSE are unique in the broadband market by offering fixed fee broadband contracts. If you’re an existing SSE customer they will guarantee that your SSE Broadband monthly contract fee won’t be increased within 3 years.

In addition there is no fixed contract term which means you can essentially take out an SSE broadband contract on a rolling month to month contract basis.

Broadband pricing is very competitive (particularly for existing SSE customers), usage is unlimited and telephone support is provided from UK based call centres.

SSE represent one of the most flexible providers of low cost unlimited broadband. If you’re a current SSE customer their broadband offers are hard to beat.

Types of SSE broadband explained

There are three main SSE broadband options – all unlimited – which can be mixed and matched with different landline call options.

The broadband you choose will be defined by how much you intent to use the Internet, how many people in your household will be using it along with the number of devices that will be connected to your network.

SSE Unlimited Fibre Plus

The Unlimited Fibre Plus is the fastest fibre optic broadband on offer from SSE with average download speeds of 63 Mbps.

SSE Unlimited Fibre

Unlimited Fibre Broadband from SSE operates with an average 35 Mbps rate.

SSE Unlimited Broadband

SSE Unlimited Broadband is the standard ADSL broadband offering from SSE and runs at an average 11 Mbps level.

Remember if you’re an existing SSE energy customer you will receive a 3 year fix on the quoted monthly broadband fees (which are already very competitive) as well as no connection charge.

There is unlimited usage on all contracts and a UK based call centre for tech support.

If you don’t use your landline for calls you can choose the pay as you go options for making landline calls, but if you use your landline you can select anytime landline and mobile calls and even an option to make international calls if you call abroad regularly. Just selection the call option that suits you best.

Can I get SSE broadband? Use our SSE broadband checker

Provided that you are close to a BT telephone exchange (which the vast majority of people in the UK are) you should be able to receive SSE broadband to your home.

The best way to check broadband availability is to use our SSE broadband checker tool which allows you to enter your postcode to check the availability of broadband services in your area.

There are a number of filters that you can use on the availability checker to drill down using the options that are most relevant to your own requirements.

SSE TV and broadband

Unlike dedicated multimedia companies such as Sky or Virgin Media, SSE do not currently offer TV viewing options with their broadband and phone contracts. This does not represent a problem unless you want your bills to be consolidated at one provider because you can pick and choose which TV entertainment packages you may want – including services from e.g. Sky, Freeview, NowTV, Netflix, etc. and use them in conjunction with your SSE broadband and phone line.

You will be viewing Sky TV channels via a satellite connection but there are a range of catch-up TV services that will require the use of your broadband to download the programming onto your Sky Q box so when choosing your broadband option bear in mind the Sky broadband speed you would ideally need to stream content and the number of devices that might be sharing the connection. The more devices that are accessing the broadband connection at the same time, the more chance that there could be decreased speeds across the network.

SSE broadband positives and negatives

Positive reasons to buy SSE broadband

  • SSE broadband contracts are among the most competitively priced broadband packages in the UK.
  • If you use SSE for your home energy supply you are able to get some excellent existing customer deals on your broadband.
  • SSE offer broadband contracts on a no fixed term basis so you have the flexibility to leave if you should decide to.
  • SSE broadband offers a 3 year price fix on their broadband contracts for their existing energy customers. Offering price fixes is fairly commonplace in the energy industry (of which SSE is a major player) but in the broadband industry SSE are one of the only providers to offer a fix on their (already low) broadband pricing.
  • There is a choice between standard ADSL, fibre broadband and landline call options.
  • Broadband contracts come with unlimited usage so there are no limits on downloads.
  • An Internet security package is provided for new broadband customers along with a free router.
  • If you don’t want to take out a home landline with SSE you don’t have to – you could choose to only use SSE for broadband only.
  • Telephone support for SSE broadband is provided from a UK only call centre.
  • There are a good selection of landline call options to choose from, including anytime calls to landlines and mobiles, as well as an option to make international calls to landlines in 35 different countries. Just choose the landline call option most suited to you during the online broadband signup.

Potential negatives with SSE broadband

  • The best SSE broadband deals are reserved for existing SSE energy customers.
  • If you aren’t an SSE energy customer be aware of possible monthly price hikes.
  • There is no TV bundle option – only SSE broadband and phone line.
  • Beware of broadband traffic management from SSE.
