Plusnet broadband review and overview

Plusnet started out business as an ISP in the late 1990’s in Yorkshire and although they were bought out in 2007 by BT they have retained their Yorkshire roots and are still operated under their own brand.

Broadband packages from Plusnet vary between 10Mb and 66Mb average speeds depending on the package you choose and in contrast with other broadband providers there is a greater degree of flexibility in contract length at Plusnet. They are one of the only ISP’s that offer a no annual contract term (14 days’ notice to cancel) and you do not have to have your home landline with Plusnet to obtain broadband from them. So if you are looking for a short term home broadband option Plusnet is an excellent option.

Broadband packages from Plusnet are very competitively priced and are regularly among the best value on the market.
If you are looking to switch broadband from your current provider to Plusnet there is a useful guide on the Plusnet site that provides details.

Types of Plusnet broadband explained

The type of broadband you select at Plusnet will be determined as to whether you want a short contract or don’t mind being tied into a standard 12 or 18 month contract, how fast you want your downloads to be and whether you want to bundle the broadband with calls and TV deals.

Plusnet Unlimited Broadband

The Plusnet Unlimited Broadband option can be purchased with a landline from Plusnet or you can keep your existing landline.

Broadband speeds average 10Mb (with unlimited usage) so if you are planning on streaming content or have high demands for line speed you may want to look at the fibre optic broadband options from Plusnet.

Contracts can be taken over 12 months, 18 months or on a no annual contract basis for maximum flexibility (although this costs a little more per month) and Plusnet will supply you with a wireless router.

Plusnet Fibre Broadband

Plusnet Fibre is the mid-range fibre broadband option at average speeds of 36Mb per second and is up to 8x faster than standard broadband.

Usage is unlimited and contracts can be taken over 18 months or 12 months with the option of adding line rental to the package for a small extra month charge.

The Plusnet Hub One is included with fibre broadband contracts which acts as a dual band wi-fi router.

Plusnet Fibre Extra Broadband

The Plusnet Fibre Extra Broadband option is the fastest fibre broadband on offer from Plusnet with average speeds of 66Mb, unlimited usage, the option to add extras to the bundle and you will receive the Plusnet Hub One wireless router.

Contracts can be taken over 12 or 18 months.

Can I get Plusnet broadband? Use our Plusnet broadband checker

The ability to get Plusnet broadband will depend on where you live within the UK. Plusnet is owned by BT so that means the chances of you being able to get Plusnet broadband are high because BT has the widest broadband coverage area.

Pricing is typically cheaper than the parent company BT’s pricing because although they share an infrastructure, Plusnet install their own equipment in telephone exchanges and as a consequence can provide cost savings which are passed onto the company.

Plusnet fibre broadband uses the same technology as the BT Infinity (Superfast) network infrastructure so the availability will be dependent on whether BT has rolled out superfast broadband in an area close to you.

To check whether you can get Plusnet fibre or standard ADSL use our broadband postcode checker tool. You simply need to enter your home postcode into the tool and we will output all of the broadband deals you could get at your location. You can filter deals by provider so choose to show only Plusnet from the filter or show all deals to compare against other broadband providers.

Plusnet TV and broadband

If you subscribe to one of the Plusnet Unlimited Fibre packages with Plusnet home phone you can take out a Plusnet YouView TV subscription which will provide you with set top box that has the capability to pause, rewind and record TV shows as well as accessing on-demand and catch-up TV services.

Plusnet YouView boxes

Choose from either the YouView or YouView+ box. The main differences between the two boxes is that the YouView+ box allows you to record up to 150 hours of HD programming (or 300 hours of SD Freeview) whereas the standard YouView box does not allow you to record (although you can pause and rewind live TV).
