Summary
You may know SSE primarily as an energy company, but they have been a provider of broadband contracts for some time and as a large and well established company you can be guaranteed that they have a strong technical infrastructure in place.
If you’re a current SSE energy customer there are usually excellent broadband offers in place, but you can also take their broadband if you receive your gas and electricity from elsewhere.

Features
SSE offer the choice of ADSL or the faster fibre broadband connections. A home phone landline is included as standard in all broadband contracts and so is a free wireless router.

Broadband speeds
SSE offer a choice of ADSL or Fibre broadband connections ranging from average download speeds of 11Mbps through to their fastest connection which averages at 63Mbps download.
Upload speed will vary depending on the contract chosen but you should average either 1Mbps, 9Mbps or 19Mbps average upload speeds.
All SSE broadband contracts are unlimited which means you can download or upload content without the fear of incurring extra bandwidth costs because you’re unlimited.
There are a small and straightforward number of broadband contracts to choose from so your main consideration will of course be price, but also how fast you need your broadband to be based on the number of devices in your home and whether you tend to stream movies, TV or music or do other broadband intensive activities.
SSE router
As part of your broadband contract with SSE you will receive a free wireless router, specifically the Tecnicolor TG589. This router is dual band which will mean you can separate devices on your home network so you will be able to maximise the signal strength between devices.
The Tecnicolor TG589 has four gigabit Ethernet ports which will give you lightning fast wired broadband connections. The router is one of the more capable free Wi-Fi routers on offer but arguably isn’t as sophisticated as the latest router models from Sky such as the Sky Q hub or the latest BT Smart Hubs.
As is the case with most broadband companies if you were to leave the contract early you would be required to return the router back to SSE, but remember that SSE operate a Happiness Guarantee which means if at any time during the first 60 days of you contract you are not happy with the service you will be able to cancel and return the router with no penalty.
