Summary

EE is one of the largest providers of mobile phone contracts in the UK and with their acquisition by BT it has only strengthened their position in the UK telecommunications market so that they can be considered as leaders in both mobile and fixed line broadband technology.

Their fibre broadband contracts are competitive and feature an excellent smart hub router.

Plus bear in mind that if you are an EE mobile contract customer you will likely get a better deal when you sign up to home broadband from the same company. Usually in the form of a better phone contract deal.

Features

As is standard among most broadband providers, EE offer the choice of ADSL (slower) or fibre (faster) broadband options with either option including a home landline inclusive within the price and unlimited downloads.

Bear in mind that if you are an EE mobile network customer then there are often deals to be had by taking out EE home broadband. Usually these include giving you free data allowance upgrades to your current mobile phone contract.

Broadband speeds

EE home broadband is offered as standard ADSL (a slower 10Mbps average download speed) or the faster fibre broadband option which you can choose from the 36Mbps or the 67Mbps option.

The slower ADSL broadband option would be a good option for those that are on a budget and don’t use the Internet extensively. But if you live in a household where there are plenty of Wi-Fi capable devices then you will likely want to consider one of the faster fibre options – particularly if those in the household enjoy streaming TV, movies and music which can use a lot of bandwidth. Importantly if you have gamers in your household you will want to have a broadband connection that is both fast at downloads and uploads.

Whether you choose the entry level or the top speed EE broadband you will benefit from unlimited usage with no caps so there won’t be any nasty surprises with extra data charges outside of your package.

EE router

If you have signed up to one of the EE fibre broadband plans then you will receive the Smart Hub router free of charge. Those on ADSL will need to use an alternative router supplied by EE called the EE Bright Box. This can cause a slight issue if you decide to upgrade your broadband from ADSL because it will mean you would need to get the newer router. Given the negligible costs between the ADSL and mid-range fibre contract price it would make sense to opt for fibre broadband as it will futureproof yourself in terms of routers and the broadband download and upload speeds will be much better.

The EE Smart Hub itself is well specified (to be expected given that the EE parent company is BT) and features dual Wi-FI bands (2.5HHz and 5GHz) and four gigabit Ethernet ports for ease of wired connection. The hub features a range of handy management features which allow you to manage devices on the different bands and control access to the Internet based on device being used.

Encryption is standard at WPA2 on both the 2.5HHz and 5GHz bands and a Wi-Fi protected WPS button to help add devices securely to the network.
